Recipe for almond milk (dairy-free and delicious):

100g raw almonds(organic if you can) soaked in a cup of water overnight (or for a couple of hours)

blend with 1 litre of filtered water

add a dash of cinnamon (about 1/4 teaspoon or more if you like)

add a tablespoon of honey or agave nectar(suitable for diabetics)

add 1/4 teaspoon of natural vanilla extract or teaspoon of vanilla powder

add a tablespoon coconut oil (optional)

blend it all again!

strain the mixture through a nut milk bag or a clean stocking that you’re not going to wear again to get all the bits out

now you have a perfect, delicious alternative to milk to use on your cereal and in your tea but you’ll probably just drink it as is!

By the way, almonds are a very healthy source of protein, calcium, B vitamins and good-for-you fats.

Variations:

Add a few tablespoons of raw chocolate powder(available at most health stores) for a scrumptious, dairy-free chocolate milk.

or

Add a dash of nutmeg for a different taste sensation!

Almond milk will keep for a couple days in the fridge (if you can leave it for that long!)

4/5 large dark green leaves (spinach or swiss chard work well but any green salad leaves will do)

Juice and give it all a good mix and enjoy!

The apples are great for the liver and bowels and the grapefruit is good for cleansing your joints and boosting the immune system! Lemon is cleansing and alkalising and also great for stimulating bile production. The greens are nourishing, packed with chlorophyll which helps revitalise the blood and also alkalising. Beetroot is a great detoxifier for the blood and the bowels!

A healthy, tasy, refreshing juice! Enjoy!

If you want to get things moving in your colon then I recommend taking psyllium husks. It’s a great source of fibre and helps remove all the old waste sitting in the bowels! A great addition for a colon detox.

What does it do?

It becomes a soft, bulky mass and acts like a broom sweeping the inside of the colon to help clean it of old debris.

Psyllium also binds toxins and removes them from the digestive tract.

It reduces the the amount of time waste sits in the colon by moving things along at a quicker pace( this lessens the chance of waste putrefying in the colon).

It also helps lower cholesterol!

It helps remove toxins produced by candida overgrowth in the intestines and is great to take if you are on a candida diet as it helps remove the candida organism too.

It also helps build up the friendly bacteria populations in the gut (great for anyone who’s been on a course of antibiotics).

Where to get it and how to take it?

It’s available at health shops and is relatively inexpensive. Health Connection and Nature’s choice are two brands to try. It’s usually found in the ground form which makes it easier to mix and drink.

The best way to take psyllium is to mix a heaped teaspoon into a glass of water or juice. Mix well and drink immediately before it starts to become jelly-like. It’s also best to take it on an empty stomach in the morn and wait about half an hour before you eat. You can also take it before any other meal during the day or just before bedtime.

Pysllium can also be added to smoothies for extra fibre and bulk.

Extra note on psyllium:

Psyllium is not habit forming and can be used safely on a regular basis. It’s also safe for pregant and lactating women.

If you want to detox properly then the first step is to clean out your colon! Most of us don’t have a healthy functioning colon! In fact, colon problems are one of the biggest health problems in western cultures today! Colon cancer is also on the rise and is one of the most common cancers in western societies.

So what is a healthy colon?

1. You should be having at least 2-3 bowel movements per day( one for each meal you consume). Yes, if you have only one or none per day then you are constipated and have a sluggish colon!

2. Bowel movements should be soft, bulky, smooth, unformed(kind of like smooth peanut butter), generally light in colour and easy to pass (if you’re straining and grunting there’s a problem!).

3. If you’re gassy, bloated, have indigestion and heartburn and your abdomen feels uncomfortable then your colon is taking strain and needs a good clean-out!

Why is your colon not functioning properly?

Modern diets usually consist of too much processed, fibreless and nutrient devoid food(eg. white bread, animal protein, processed sugar, dairy, softdrinks, coffee, pastries, refined pasta, fried foods, sugary cereals…you get the idea!) and not enough fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh wholegrains, nuts, seeds, pulses and clean water. Add stress, ignoring nature’s call and lack of exercise and you are on your way to an unhealthy colon!

Why you should be concerned?

An unhealthy and dysfunctional colon leads to many health problems and is generally the root cause of most digestive problems and associated health problems.

Mucoid plaque: this is a layer that builds up on the inside of your colon wall and is formed by mucus-coated, fibreless food sludge. This layer builds up and stops nutrients from being absorbed by the lining in the colon. Eventually there is only a small hole left for the waste matter to pass through! Think of a dirty drain that gets layered with grime and clogged up! This layer is home to pathogenic organisms, bad bacteria and parasites as these feed on this layer that is putrefying in your colon. Nice thought!

Leaky gut syndrome: this when the toxins in your bowel get re-absorbed into your bloodstream because you have old waste lining the colon wall(mucoid plaque). So all the nasty stuff hanging around in the colon starts to circulate through your body. This causes auto-intoxication!

Diverticulosis: this is caused by constipation. Pressure in the bowel from backed up and impacted waste causes the colon to form pockets or sacs and these become filled with old fecal matter that can become infected and start to rot!

Polyps: these are tumours that protrude into the bowel and can become cancerous.

Parasites: a dirty, backed up and unhealthy colon is a breeding ground for worms and parasites that feed off the old waste and deposit their own wastes into your body while stealing nutrients from your body!
